Coven Taylor’s Arrival

Goodness, I don’t think I’ll ever get over the beauty of birth. I’m so humbled to be able to capture the very first moments of a baby’s life. Telling these stories is such an honor! Below is the story of Coven Taylor’s arrival:

Priscilla texted me around 9:30am on August 1st and said “We’re having a baby today!” She’d been working through contractions at home since about 3:30am, and her doctor advised her to come in to the hospital that morning. After checking in, she let me know that she was dilated to 3cm. Around 11:30am, the nurses prepped her for the epidural. I knew I probably had some time before I needed to head that way, but I made childcare plans and started to get really excited! A brand new life was on the way!

Around 3pm, they decided to start Pitocin to speed things up. Priscilla had dilated to about 4cm and was feeling much better after getting the epidural. A couple hours later, they checked her again and she had dilated to 7cm! It was time for me to head to the hospital – I usually plan to arrive around 5cm, but she had jumped so quickly to 7cm! She was feeling some pressure but we figured it would still be a few hours until baby arrived. I arrived at the hospital around 5:30pm.

The three words Priscilla used to describe her ideal birth atmosphere were “calming, loving, and relaxed.” I was so happy to walk into a room that was exactly that. Her family was patiently awaiting little Coven’s arrival and making guesses on his weight and height. It was so sweet to see their excitement to meet their first child/grandchild/nephew!

Around 6:20pm, the doctors broke Priscilla’s water to try to keep things moving along. This created a bit more pressure and she started to feel each wave a bit more. In between her contractions, she was still joking and smiling with her family. We all knew it wouldn’t be long before baby was here so they made plans for some friends to come say hello!winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0016winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0017winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0019winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0020winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0022winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0023winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0025winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0026winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0027winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0028winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0030winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0031winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0032winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0033winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0034winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0035winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0036winstonsalembirthphotographer_laurenjollyphotography_0037At about 8:30pm, the doctor check Priscilla – she was 10cm and ready to push! The nurse warned her that she may be pushing for a few hours since she was a first-time-mom. But as soon as she started her “trial” pushes, her nurse knew it wouldn’t be that long – she was a natural!

The song “Holy Spirit” by Francesca Battistelli played on repeat while Priscilla and Chase inched closer to meeting their son.

Only 27 minutes later, Coven was born! What a perfect, sweet baby boy! There wasn’t a dry eye in the room – and yes, that includes me!
