then and now

Because, to be honest, coming up with subjects to blog about everyday is very hard, I’ve decided to re-post something from my old blog. I took some photos of my little Moosey and used them as an example of some of the lighting techniques I’ve learned. I figured many of you haven’t read most of my posts from the old blog so I can cheat a little ;)

I took these photos using only the light coming in from the window at our rental house in Emerald Isle:

After taking a lighting course, I learned that a poster board can be used as a reflector to get a little bit more light on the side that isn’t being lit by the sun or available light source. Here is what happened when I aimed my flash at the poster board and reflected it back onto the other side of Moose’s sweet little face:

See how the shadows are a little less harsh on the right side of his face? I love all of these photos (maybe I’m biased) but the lighting can be tweaked differently for different situations. The lighting is a little bit more dramatic in the first photos (and could be even more dramatic if the time of day was different) and might be exactly what you’re looking for, but it’s always good to know how to control lighting as much as possible, especially when you can do it without spending an entire paycheck on expensive studio lighting :)

Hope you all enjoyed the first of many “then and now” posts! Have a great weekend!
