I’m not really sure where to start telling this Raleigh hospital birth story. Hannah reached out during her pregnancy to see if I was available to be her doula. She wanted birth photos, but the most important part for her was having a strong support system. As nervous as I was to step into this new role, I also felt that I had the knowledge and experience to do it. I was so excited to be part of their second baby’s birth.
On May 21st, Hannah texted me an update: she was 6cm at her OB appointment but wasn’t feeling any contractions! I told her that her body knew exactly what to do and that was amazing progress! We knew it wouldn’t be long before she met her son!
Early the next morning, I got the text from her that she and Sean were heading towards the hospital. Her contractions were getting intense. I should also mention that Hannah’s first birth was QUICK! We both were very aware that once things got started, I need to be ready to meet them. I decided to head her way around 6am.
When I walked in, I could clearly see that Sean had been a huge support and birth coach. They were working together through some intense contractions but still able to laugh and talk in between. The joy and excitement in the room was so great!
I quickly set my bag down, snapped a few laboring shots, then found my place next to Hannah. I held her hand as she worked through each contraction, taking them on one at a time. It was such an honor to be beside her, cheering her on, and reminding her that her baby is so close.
As time went on, Hannah’s OB offered to break her water to get things moving. She started to get nervous that things would intensify too much if she did. We asked for a minute to talk it over. Ultimately she decided that breaking her water was the best decision for them. It was great that she took some time to make sure she felt good about it.
After her water was broken, things moved quickly. She only pushed a few times and her baby boy was here!
William Lee Smith – born ON his due date, completely perfect in every way.
These moments are everything. I got to support Hannah as she powered through her labor AND I got to capture these sweet moments. This beautiful family of three is finally a family of four. There’s just nothing better – I’m so grateful for my job!
